Oat Market Size in Europe
The Europe oat market reached $X in 2022, growing by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Oat Production in Europe
In value terms, oat production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of oat production was Russia (X tons), comprising approx. 28% of total volume. Moreover, oat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), twofold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9% share.
In Russia, oat production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+1.1% per year) and Spain (+6.5% per year).
The average oat yield rose modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 2.8% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 7.4%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of oats production in Europe expanded modestly to X ha, with an increase of 1.8% against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Oat Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2022, overseas shipments of oats decreased by -4.2% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, oat exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +93.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Finland (X tons), Sweden (X tons), the UK (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons), together recording 63% of total export. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together constituting a 10% share of total exports. The following exporters - Estonia (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Germany (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) - together made up 19% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 46% of total exports.
The UK, with a CAGR of +27.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Oat Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of oats, when their volume decreased by -7.3% to X tons. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 14%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, oat imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.6% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the largest importers of oats, together constituting 79% of total imports. Switzerland (X tons), Norway (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and the UK (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total imports. Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Latvia, the UK and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +24.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and Switzerland ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
