Exports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of onions and shallots exported in Europe rose modestly to X tons, surging by 2.1% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports reached $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 63% of total exports. Spain (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports. Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Russia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+61.7%), Poland (+7.6%), France (+4.2%), Austria (+3.2%) and Spain (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +61.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland and Russia increased by +3 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in Europe, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +5.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+6.4% per year) and Poland (+12.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, purchases abroad of onions and shallots was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports rose to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Russia (X tons) was the major importer of onions and shallots in Europe, making up 56% of total import. France (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 9.7% share of total imports. Ukraine (X tons), Spain (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Italy (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +53.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest onion and shallot importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 44% of total imports. France, Belgium, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Romania and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +43.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 17%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
