In 2022, shipments abroad of orthopaedic appliances and splints increased by 2.7% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +17.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, orthopaedic appliances exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the twelve major exporters of orthopaedic appliances and splints, namely Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Italy and Portugal, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 73% of total exports. France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the UK, Sweden, Poland, Portugal and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +14.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 11%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
Orthopaedic appliances imports rose rapidly to X tons in 2022, surging by 13% against the year before. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +37.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, orthopaedic appliances imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of orthopaedic appliances imports in 2022 were Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together recording 86% of total import.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +27.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 52% share of total imports. The UK, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Sweden and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Ireland, with a CAGR of +17.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -18.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
