Other Cereals Market Size in Europe

In 2021, the Europe other cereals market increased by 0.2% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Other Cereals Production in Europe

In value terms, other cereals production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of other cereals production was Poland (X tons), accounting for 44% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Germany (X tons), fourfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 12% share.

In Poland, other cereals production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Germany (-1.4% per year) and France (-2.7% per year).

The average other cereals yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2021, reducing by -6.3% on 2020. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The other cereals harvested area expanded slightly to X ha in 2021, with an increase of 3.9% against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Other Cereals Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2021, exports of other cerealses in Europe fell sharply to X tons, waning by -19.8% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 103%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals exports dropped to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +72.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 63% of total exports. Germany (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (9%). The following exporters - Sweden (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses exports, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sweden (+21.9%), Belgium (+18.2%) and the Netherlands (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany, the Czech Republic and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Poland (+48 p.p.) and Sweden (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Czech Republic, Germany and France saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -10.6% and -10.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest other cereals supplier in Europe, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland stood at +26.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-0.6% per year) and France (-0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Other Cereals Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, the amount of other cerealses imported in Europe contracted dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -18.2% on 2020. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +62.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +6.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main importers of other cerealses in 2021, accounting for near 35% and 25% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), committing a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +29.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest other cereals importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 59% of total imports. France, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Greece, with a CAGR of +30.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
