P-Xylene Market Size in Europe
In 2021, the Europe p-xylene market increased by 3.1% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
P-Xylene Production in Europe
In value terms, p-xylene production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 115%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of p-xylene exported in Europe was estimated at X tons, increasing by 8.2% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, p-xylene exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together creating a 47% share of total exports. France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to p-xylene exports from the Netherlands stood at -5.9%. At the same time, Belgium (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012-2021. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-4.1%) and Germany (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium and France increased by +15 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest p-xylene supplier in Europe, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.
In the Netherlands, p-xylene exports contracted by an average annual rate of -10.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+8.6% per year) and France (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-4.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
P-Xylene Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, purchases abroad of p-xylene increased by 37% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, p-xylene imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Portugal was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 37% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 21% share, followed by Belgium (19%), Spain (11%) and Poland (8.1%). Russia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +267.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest p-xylene importing markets in Europe were Portugal ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Spain, Poland and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +245.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 35% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
