Paddy Rice Market Size in Europe

The Europe paddy rice market rose slightly to $X in 2021, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Paddy Rice Production in Europe

In value terms, paddy rice production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Italy (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Spain (X tons), with a combined 83% share of total production. Greece, Portugal, France and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average paddy rice yield stood at X tons per ha in 2021, approximately equating the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the paddy rice yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of paddy rice were harvested in Europe; approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of paddy rice, when their volume decreased by -29% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Greece (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 50% of total exports in 2021. Bulgaria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Spain (11%), Italy (8.8%) and Portugal (5.6%). The Netherlands (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +89.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Greece ($X), Russia ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 56% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +69.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Paddy Rice Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of paddy rice increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 71%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the main importer of paddy rice in Europe, comprising 72% of total import. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), constituting a 4.9% share of total imports. The following importers - the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Portugal ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 61% share of total imports.

Spain, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
