Papaya Market Size in Europe

The Europe papaya market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -12.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Papaya Production in Europe

In value terms, papaya production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 45%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Greece (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Spain (X tons), with a combined 99% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +2,985.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

Papaya Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of papayas decreased by -33.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, papaya exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 59% of total exports in 2022. Portugal (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Germany (7%) and the UK (4.6%). The following exporters - Bulgaria (X tons) and Greece (X tons) - each recorded an 8.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +51.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest papaya supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Portugal ($X), with a combined 74% share of total exports. Germany, the UK, Greece and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +49.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Papaya Imports

Imports in Europe

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of papayas decreased by -19.6% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, papaya imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Portugal (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the key importers of papayas in Europe, together constituting 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +10.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest papaya importing markets in Europe were Portugal ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +10.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
