The Europe paper and paperboard market dropped dramatically to $X in 2022, reducing by -25.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) were exported in Europe; with a decrease of -5.7% against the year before. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Switzerland (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the UK (X tons) and Sweden (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total exports. Spain (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Romania (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by North Macedonia (with a CAGR of +84.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paper and paperboard supplying countries in Europe were France ($X), Switzerland ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 56% of total exports. Germany, the UK, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Spain, Romania, North Macedonia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
Among the main exporting countries, North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +82.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) imported in Europe dropped to X tons, waning by -12.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Greece (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main importers of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), together committing 60% of total imports. Spain (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Austria (X tons), Albania (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paper and paperboard importing markets in Europe were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 45% of total imports. France, the Czech Republic, the UK, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia and Albania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
Croatia, with a CAGR of +15.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
