The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, France (X units) was the largest exporter of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks, making up 32% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X units), Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Denmark (X units) and Poland (X units), together generating a 47% share of total exports. Belarus (X units), Italy (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Slovakia (X units) and Spain (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawing chalk exports from France stood at +4.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+36.8%), Denmark (+34.8%), Poland (+33.0%), Belgium (+12.2%), Italy (+11.7%), Slovakia (+10.4%), the Netherlands (+7.2%) and Germany (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-2.5%) and Spain (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Denmark (+5.4 p.p.), Belgium (+4.9 p.p.), Poland (+4.1 p.p.) and Belarus (+4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-2.7 p.p.), Spain (-6.3 p.p.) and France (-10.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest drawing chalk supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, Slovakia and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +31.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -8.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +54.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.5% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Germany (X units), Slovakia (X units), Russia (X units), the Netherlands (X units), the UK (X units), France (X units), Poland (X units), Spain (X units), Belgium (X units), Italy (X units), Belarus (X units) and Ukraine (X units) was the largest importer of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in Europe, making up 84% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 36% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Slovakia, Ukraine and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +13.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.9%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
