Pear Market Size in Europe

The Europe pear market declined to $X in 2021, which is down by -14.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Pear Production in Europe

In value terms, pear production plummeted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons), with a combined 43% share of total production. Italy, Portugal, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, Greece, France, Serbia, Romania and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +7.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pear yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2021, with a decrease of -13.8% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the pear yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of pears in Europe reduced to X ha, with a decrease of -3.9% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 6.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pear production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of pears were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main exporters of pears in Europe, together resulting at approx. 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together comprising a 37% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pear supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 69% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Portugal, Poland and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +23.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pear Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of pears was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the eight major importers of pears, namely Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Belarus, the UK and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

France, the UK, the Netherlands, Belarus, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Romania, Sweden and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +21.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
