Dry Peas Market Size in Europe
The Europe dry peas market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -7.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Dry Peas Production in Europe
In value terms, dry peas production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of dry peas production, accounting for 47% of total volume. Moreover, dry peas production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ukraine (X tons), with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia amounted to +4.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+2.0% per year) and Ukraine (+4.6% per year).
The average dry peas yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2021, approximately equating 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of peas (dry) were harvested in Europe; waning by -1.8% against the previous year. The total harvested area indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dry peas harvested area increased by +1.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 23%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the dry peas harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Dry Peas Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2021, shipments abroad of peas (dry) increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dry peas exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the key exporter of peas (dry), creating 51% of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by France (9.2%). Belgium (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry peas exports from Russia stood at +7.9%. At the same time, Latvia (+88.0%), Estonia (+37.8%), Belgium (+26.2%), Lithuania (+21.2%), Germany (+8.0%), Ukraine (+7.0%) and the Czech Republic (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +88.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Latvia (+3.5 p.p.), Belgium (+3.4 p.p.), Russia (+3 p.p.), Lithuania (+2.8 p.p.) and Estonia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France saw its share reduced by -13.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest dry peas supplier in Europe, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +7.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (+6.3% per year) and France (-2.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Dry Peas Imports
Imports in Europe
Dry peas imports dropped to X tons in 2021, waning by -5.3% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 102% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dry peas imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 66%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the six major importers of peas (dry), namely Italy, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Spain and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Latvia (X tons), committing a 5.3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Latvia (with a CAGR of +59.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 45% of total imports. The Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Among the main importing countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +51.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight descent. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
