Green Peas Production in Europe

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together accounting for 46% of total production. Russia, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Serbia, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +5.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of peas (green) in Europe reduced modestly to X tons per ha, dropping by -4.8% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the green peas yield remained at a lower figure. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 195% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, green peas exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
France represented the main exporter of peas (green) in Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 42% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together mixing up a 39% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from France increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+75.4%), Slovakia (+33.4%) and Poland (+29.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +75.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Romania (-1.3%), the Netherlands (-2.0%) and Germany (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+7.4 p.p.), France (+7 p.p.), Slovakia (+6.5 p.p.) and Latvia (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-1.9 p.p.) and Germany (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in Europe, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.4% share.
In the Netherlands, green peas exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+0.6% per year) and Germany (-4.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green peas export price increased by +91.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of peas (green). At the same time, Spain (+22.8%), Italy (+7.2%), the UK (+5.1%) and Germany (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +22.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-4.7%) and the Netherlands (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+6.9 p.p.) and the UK (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-2.1 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-10.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest green peas importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports. Germany, France, Spain and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +22.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
