Permanent Magnet Market Size in Europe

The Europe permanent magnet market surged to $X in 2021, jumping by 49% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, permanent magnet production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of permanent magnets increased by 9.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, permanent magnet exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total exports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.8% share, followed by France (7.2%). The following exporters - the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest permanent magnet supplier in Europe, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-1.8% per year) and Switzerland (-3.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild decline. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of permanent magnets were imported in Europe; jumping by 18% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, permanent magnet imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the major importers of permanent magnets, together committing 75% of total imports. Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported permanent magnets in Europe, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6.9% share.

In Germany, permanent magnet imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+4.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
