Persimmon Market Size in Europe

After five years of growth, the Europe persimmon market decreased by -5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Persimmon Production in Europe

In value terms, persimmon production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 40%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

The country with the largest volume of persimmon production was Spain (X tons), accounting for 91% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Spain, persimmon production increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

The average persimmon yield reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, stabilizing at 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the yield showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the persimmon yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The persimmon harvested area contracted to X ha in 2021, which is down by -7.1% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to persimmon production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Persimmon Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of persimmons were exported in Europe; dropping by -12.9% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, persimmon exports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 61%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), making up a 4.6% share of total exports. Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to persimmon exports from Spain stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Lithuania (+7.6%) and Italy (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2021. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.9%) and the Netherlands (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Lithuania (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Spain saw its share reduced by -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in Europe, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 3.4% share.

In Spain, persimmon exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-4.3% per year) and Lithuania (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Persimmon Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of persimmons decreased by -3.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.7% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the largest importer of persimmons, committing 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), together making up a 31% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to persimmon imports into Russia stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Ukraine (+14.3%), Italy (+12.7%), Germany (+10.9%), Lithuania (+7.8%), Belarus (+6.5%), Poland (+4.2%), France (+4.0%) and Switzerland (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. Ukraine (+10 p.p.), Germany (+3 p.p.) and Italy (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -15.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in Europe, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 7.5% share.

In Russia, persimmon imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+11.4% per year) and Ukraine (+4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.2% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
