Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sodium phosphates exports totaled $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Germany represented the largest exporter of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. France (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (4.8%). Slovenia (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium. At the same time, Slovenia (+16.4%) and Spain (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2021. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.8%), France (-2.9%) and Italy (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Germany and Slovenia increased by +11 and +2.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest sodium phosphates supplier in Europe, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 4.1% share.

In Germany, sodium phosphates exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-2.3% per year) and Belgium (+7.2% per year).

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 51% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sodium phosphates export price increased by +64.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium, when their volume decreased by -15.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of sodium phosphates imports in 2021 were Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), Italy (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together reaching 87% of total import. The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ireland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Denmark ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 31% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Germany, Belgium, the UK, France, Spain, Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 52%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +16.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 32% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
