For the third consecutive year, the Europe phosphinates and phosphonates market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 33% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +58.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites) increased by 9.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, phosphinates and phosphonates exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +79.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Switzerland was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 45% of total exports. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Italy (11%), France (7.2%), the Netherlands (6.3%) and Spain (4.8%). Germany (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Switzerland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites). At the same time, France (+62.7%), Spain (+14.1%), Italy (+9.8%), the Netherlands (+7.6%) and Belgium (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +62.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (+7.2 p.p.), Italy (+5.9 p.p.), Spain (+3.2 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Switzerland and Germany saw its share reduced by -4.4% and -4.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) remains the largest phosphinates and phosphonates supplier in Europe, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Switzerland stood at +3.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+119.3% per year) and Italy (+8.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+34.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites) increased by 5.9% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, phosphinates and phosphonates imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Germany was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 42% of total imports. Italy (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together took near 48% share of total imports. The UK (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+15.6%), the Netherlands (+9.9%), Italy (+4.8%) and Switzerland (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany increased by +6.3, +2.9, +2.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites) in Europe, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany stood at +13.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+16.3% per year) and France (+9.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded buoyant growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
