Production of Phosphorus, Arsenic And Selenium in Europe

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

Phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports declined notably to X tons in 2021, which is down by -24% compared with the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), mixing up a 15% share of total exports. Germany (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports from Poland stood at +29.7%. At the same time, Ukraine (+39.9%), Belgium (+2.9%) and Russia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +39.9% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland and Ukraine increased by +59 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) emerged as the largest phosphorus, arsenic and selenium supplier in Europe, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 14% share.

In Poland, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-0.8% per year) and Germany (-17.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+26.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Phosphorus, Arsenic And Selenium

Imports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium were imported in Europe; with an increase of 10% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (8.7%). The following importers - Denmark (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) - each reached a 9.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +145.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest phosphorus, arsenic and selenium importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +77.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
