Pigeon Peas Market Size in Europe
The Europe pigeon peas market dropped notably to $X in 2021, reducing by -23.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +36.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Pigeon Peas Production in Europe
In value terms, pigeon peas production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of pigeon peas production was France (X tons), comprising approx. 61% of total volume. Moreover, pigeon peas production in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ukraine (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in France was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (-0.3% per year) and Spain (+0.1% per year).

Exports in Europe
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of pigeon peas decreased by -19.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pigeon peas exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
France represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 63% of total exports. The UK (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Belgium (9.8%). The following exporters - Spain (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pigeon peas exports from France stood at +48.9%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+55.7%), Hungary (+47.5%), Belgium (+15.7%) and the UK (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +55.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Spain (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of France, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Hungary increased by +59, +3.9, +3.5, +2.9 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest pigeon peas supplying countries in Europe were France ($X), the UK ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 74% share of total exports.
France, with a CAGR of +42.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of pigeon peas were imported in Europe; declining by -38% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pigeon peas imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
The UK represented the main importer of pigeon peas in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Italy (6%) and the Netherlands (5.1%). Serbia (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pigeon peas imports into the UK stood at +21.8%. At the same time, Serbia (+40.4%), the Netherlands (+40.1%), Belgium (+35.6%), Germany (+28.4%), France (+14.3%) and Italy (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Serbia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +40.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Serbia increased by +20, +8.6, +5.1 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the UK ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pigeon peas in Europe, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 7.1% share.
In the UK, pigeon peas imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+49.3% per year) and Belgium (+32.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
