The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +46.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spectacle plastic frame exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

Italy was the main exporter of plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2021. The Netherlands (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X units) and Germany (X units). All these countries together took near 21% share of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X units), the UK (X units) and Denmark (X units) - together made up 8.7% of total exports.

Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Spain (+16.2%), Denmark (+14.4%), the Netherlands (+14.1%), Germany (+8.1%) and France (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the UK (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+21 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.8 p.p.) and Spain (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of France (-4.6 p.p.) and the UK (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest spectacle plastic frame supplier in Europe, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 5.4% share.

In Italy, spectacle plastic frame exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+9.5% per year) and Spain (+11.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spectacle plastic frame imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X units), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X units), France (X units), Germany (X units), the UK (X units), Spain (X units) and Russia (X units) were the major importers of plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles, together creating 80% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X units), Hungary (X units) and Poland (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +18.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 49% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia, which together accounted for a further 32%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
