Polyethylene Binder Market Size in Europe

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Europe polyethylene binder market, when its value decreased by -5.5% to $X. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, shipments abroad of polyethylene or polypropylene binder or baler (agricultural) twines decreased by -4.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyethylene binder exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Portugal was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 53% of total exports. Hungary (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Russia (X tons). All these countries together held near 24% share of total exports. Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Finland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Portugal increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hungary (+12.8%), Germany (+2.4%) and Serbia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. Russia, Poland and Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hungary and Portugal increased by +12 and +5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Portugal ($X) remains the largest polyethylene binder supplier in Europe, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Portugal totaled +3.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+14.6% per year) and the Czech Republic (-2.0% per year).

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Finland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Serbia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of polyethylene or polypropylene binder or baler (agricultural) twines were imported in Europe; standing approx. at the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polyethylene binder imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of polyethylene or polypropylene binder or baler (agricultural) twines, namely France, Germany and the UK, represented more than third of total import. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), Romania (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together achieving a 22% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Greece (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polyethylene binder importing markets in Europe were France ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X), together accounting for 47% of total imports. Romania, Spain, Italy, Russia, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Hungary and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +20.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
