In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +4.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, shipments abroad of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols decreased by -23.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the key exporters of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols in 2022, amounting to approx. 33% and 26% of total exports, respectively. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Belgium (11%) and Estonia (5.6%). The Netherlands (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +82.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest polyphenols and phenol-alcohols supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 67% of total exports.
France, with a CAGR of +57.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Polyphenols And Phenol-Alcohols Imports
Imports in Europe
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols decreased by -21.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the UK (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the major importers of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols, together generating 77% of total imports. The following importers - Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Russia (X tons), Norway (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Finland (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports into Belgium stood at -6.4%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+11.5%), Spain (+5.7%), Poland (+4.8%) and Norway (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands, Russia and Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.8%), Italy (-2.1%), Germany (-3.2%) and France (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the Czech Republic increased by +3.5, +2.6, +2.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 47% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Italy, France, Poland, Spain, Russia, the Czech Republic, Norway and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +13.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
