In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +31.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the key exporters of polypropylene in primary forms in 2022, amounting to approx. 18% and 14% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together comprising a 41% share of total exports. Slovakia (X tons), Greece (X tons), the UK (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the largest polypropylene in primary forms supplier in Europe, comprising 20% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 9.1% share.
In Germany, polypropylene in primary forms exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+0.0% per year) and Russia (+24.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Polypropylene in Primary Forms
Imports in Europe
After seven years of growth, supplies from abroad of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -13.8% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 65%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of polypropylene in primary forms, namely Italy, Germany and Poland, represented more than third of total import. Belgium (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Portugal (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 31% share of total imports. The UK (X tons), Austria (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +9.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest polypropylene in primary forms importing markets in Europe were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +10.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
