The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 69%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons), together accounting for 68% of total production. Hungary, Croatia, Germany and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +25.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average poppy seed yield declined slightly to X kg per ha in 2022, which is down by -2% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of poppy seed in Europe was estimated at X ha, approximately mirroring 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, overseas shipments of poppy seed increased by 2.9% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 8.3%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, poppy seed exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -13.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic represented the major exporter of poppy seed in Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 42% of total exports in 2022. Spain (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (9.2%), the Netherlands (7%), France (6.9%), Austria (5.9%), Slovakia (5%) and Hungary (4.9%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to poppy seed exports from the Czech Republic stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Slovakia (+21.8%), Poland (+6.9%) and Hungary (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2022. Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.1%), Spain (-3.8%) and the Netherlands (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+4.9 p.p.) and Slovakia (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Czech Republic, Spain and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -3.8% and -6.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest poppy seed supplier in Europe, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Czech Republic stood at +2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (-0.0% per year) and Poland (+12.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, poppy seed export price decreased by -23.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 55%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe
In 2022, poppy seed imports in Europe rose slightly to X tons, surging by 1.9% on the previous year. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, poppy seed imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 76%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the main importers of poppy seed, together achieving 73% of total imports. Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest poppy seed importing markets in Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 44% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +14.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
