Lubricant Additives Market Size in Europe
The Europe lubricant additives market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Lubricant Additives Production in Europe
In value terms, lubricant additives production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, lubricant additives exports in Europe expanded sharply to X tons, increasing by 9.9% compared with 2020. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 31%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lubricant additives exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Exports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) was the main exporter of prepared additives for mineral oils, mixing up 39% of total exports. Italy (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 48% share of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and the UK (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of prepared additives for mineral oils. At the same time, Belgium (+12.3%), Belarus (+9.0%), Germany (+1.9%) and Italy (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +12.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.7%) and the UK (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belgium (+9.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-1.8 p.p.), the UK (-3.1 p.p.) and France (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest lubricant additives supplier in Europe, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 17% share.
In France, lubricant additives exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+0.4% per year) and Germany (+2.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lubricant Additives Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of prepared additives for mineral oils were imported in Europe; increasing by 4.5% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, lubricant additives imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed modest growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the largest importer of prepared additives for mineral oils in Europe, comprising 77% of total import. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), constituting a 4.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lubricant additives importing markets in Europe were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 50% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and Spain, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +5.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 8.6%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in France ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
