Explosives Market Size in Europe

The Europe explosives market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Explosives Production in Europe

In value terms, explosives production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 496% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of prepared explosives increased by 24% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, explosives exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of prepared explosives, namely Poland, Spain and France, represented more than third of total export. Portugal (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Finland (X tons), Romania (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total exports. The following exporters - Estonia (X tons), Greece (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Norway (X tons) - together made up 14% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Croatia (with a CAGR of +222.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest explosives supplying countries in Europe were France ($X), Poland ($X) and Norway ($X), together comprising 43% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Finland, Serbia, Romania, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Croatia, with a CAGR of +267.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 45%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+14.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Explosives Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of prepared explosives increased by 9.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, explosives imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Finland (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Norway (X tons) was the key importer of prepared explosives in Europe, generating 59% of total import. Spain (X tons) held a 5.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (4.6%). Croatia (X tons), France (X tons), Greece (X tons), Albania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 35% share of total imports. Finland, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Albania and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Croatia, with a CAGR of +13.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
