The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved swine meat exports totaled $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 16%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key exporters of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat in 2021, resulting at approx. 26% and 23% of total exports, respectively. Italy (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together took near 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ireland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

In value terms, the largest preserved swine meat supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, France, Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Among the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +17.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of prepared or preserved hams and cuts of swine meat increased by 1.5% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 5.3% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved swine meat imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The UK represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 34% of total imports. France (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (9.9%), Belgium (6.1%) and Italy (5%). Denmark (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into the UK decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+18.9%), Slovakia (+13.0%), Poland (+12.5%), the Czech Republic (+6.8%), Germany (+4.9%), Belgium (+2.9%), Austria (+1.8%) and France (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +18.9% from 2012-2021. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.6%), Denmark (-2.2%) and Spain (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+4.6 p.p.), France (+3.3 p.p.), Hungary (+2.5 p.p.), Belgium (+2.2 p.p.) and Poland (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the UK (-20.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest preserved swine meat importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +18.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
