For the fifth consecutive year, the Europe preserved tomato market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 5.1% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Preserved Tomato Production in Europe
In value terms, preserved tomato production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +56.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 33%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of preserved tomatoes, when their volume decreased by -6.4% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 4.8% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, preserved tomato exports reached $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Italy dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), comprising a 7.6% share of total exports. Greece (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved tomato exports from Italy stood at +2.3%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+23.1%), Portugal (+9.7%) and Greece (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Spain (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (-4.3 p.p.) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest preserved tomato supplier in Europe, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy totaled +3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (-3.1% per year) and Greece (+7.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of preserved tomatoes decreased by -8.8% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 7.8%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, preserved tomato imports totaled $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The UK (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the largest importers of preserved tomatoes in 2021, accounting for approx. 27% and 22% of total imports, respectively. France (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 22% share of total imports. Poland (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Russia and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 29%.
Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
