The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 26%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of primary cells and batteries exported in Europe amounted to X units, growing by 8.4% compared with the previous year. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +98.5% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 29%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units) and Belgium (X units) represented roughly 58% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X units) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the UK (6%). The Netherlands (X units), Romania (X units) and France (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 56% of total exports. The Netherlands, France, the UK and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Among the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries

Imports in Europe

In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries, when their volume decreased by -4% to X units. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.6% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X units), distantly followed by Russia (X units), Belgium (X units), Poland (X units), the UK (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Romania (X units) and France (X units) were the main importers of primary cells and batteries, together committing 76% of total imports. Spain (X units), Italy (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Ukraine (X units) and Sweden (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+19.3%), Poland (+15.7%), the Netherlands (+10.2%), France (+4.2%), Italy (+3.3%), Sweden (+3.1%), Ukraine (+2.7%) and Russia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2022. Belgium, the UK and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+8.6 p.p.), Poland (+5.6 p.p.), Romania (+3.9 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Spain, Russia, the UK and Belgium saw its share reduced by -3.4%, -4.1%, -4.2% and -5.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 35% share of total imports. France, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Russia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
