Pyrites Market Size in Europe

After five years of growth, the Europe pyrites market decreased by -0.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 3.3% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Pyrites Production in Europe

In value terms, pyrites production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 1.8%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of pyrites decreased by -18.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pyrites exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by Finland (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the major exporters of pyrites, together committing 94% of total exports. Germany (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +62.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Italy ($X) and the UK ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 77% of total exports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of pyrites decreased by -34.1% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrites imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) represented the key importer of pyrites, constituting 40% of total imports. The UK (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. Austria (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Italy increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Denmark (+64.8%), the UK (+27.3%) and Spain (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +64.8% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Austria (-5.6%) and Germany (-21.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+28 p.p.), the UK (+14 p.p.), Denmark (+8.4 p.p.) and Spain (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Germany saw its share reduced by -61% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Spain, Austria, Denmark and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Among the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +21.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
