Railway Track Fixture Market Size in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings were exported in Europe; increasing by 13% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, railway track fixture exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 32% of total exports. Austria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Serbia (X tons). All these countries together took near 47% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons), Belarus (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Serbia (+22.4%), Slovakia (+16.9%), Italy (+7.5%), Spain (+6.4%), Belgium (+5.6%), Austria (+3.0%) and Belarus (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Serbia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2021. France and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-3.4%) and Ukraine (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+11 p.p.), Serbia (+4.4 p.p.), Spain (+2.3 p.p.), Austria (+2.2 p.p.) and Italy (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the UK and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -14.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 37% of total exports. The UK, France, Spain, Russia, Belgium, Ukraine, Serbia, Belarus and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Among the main exporting countries, Serbia, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +87.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the main importer of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings, making up 31% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the UK (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Croatia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 35% share of total imports. Germany (X tons), Norway (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Spain (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to railway track fixture imports into Russia stood at +14.7%. At the same time, Croatia (+31.2%), Italy (+8.7%), Portugal (+6.5%), Spain (+5.7%), Switzerland (+3.6%) and Belarus (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Croatia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012-2021. The UK, Austria and Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.2%), Norway (-2.9%) and Germany (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Croatia increased by +18 and +4.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
