The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Production of Rape Or Colza Seed in Europe

In value terms, rape and colza seed production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, the average rape and colza seed yield in Europe amounted to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the rape and colza seed yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The rape and colza seed harvested area fell to X ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the rape and colza seed harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of rape or colza seed decreased by -3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rape and colza seed exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) represented the major exporter of rape or colza seed, achieving 32% of total exports. Romania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by France (9.9%), the Netherlands (8.9%) and Lithuania (6.6%). The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 25% of total exports.

Exports from Ukraine increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+30.9%), Russia (+15.4%), the Netherlands (+4.4%), Lithuania (+4.4%) and Poland (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2022. Latvia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-4.5%), Slovakia (-5.1%), Belgium (-8.3%) and Hungary (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ukraine (+17 p.p.), Romania (+9.8 p.p.), Russia (+2.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.2 p.p.) and Lithuania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Slovakia (-3.4 p.p.), Belgium (-4 p.p.), Hungary (-4.7 p.p.) and France (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest rape and colza seed supplying countries in Europe were Ukraine ($X), France ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +29.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 29%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

Rape and colza seed imports reached X tons in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rape and colza seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Germany represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 37% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together comprising a 48% share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+54.0%), the UK (+40.9%), France (+11.7%) and Poland (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +54.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-3.0%) and Belgium (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+5.6 p.p.), the UK (+5.4 p.p.), Belarus (+4.6 p.p.) and Poland (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-7.2 p.p.) and Belgium (-11.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rape or colza seed in Europe, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to +5.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (-2.5% per year) and France (+13.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country
