Cows Skin Market Size in Europe

The Europe cows skin market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cows Skin Production in Europe

In value terms, cows skin production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Italy (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and France (X tons), together accounting for 43% of total production. The UK, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Slovakia, Norway and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +28.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of bovine animals were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) represented the major exporter of raw hides and skins of bovine animals, creating 36% of total exports. Austria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Germany (11%), Slovakia (11%), Slovenia (6.8%) and France (5.1%). Portugal (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Slovenia (+8.8%), France (+8.3%), Portugal (+4.5%) and Slovakia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy, Slovenia, France and Slovakia increased by +11, +3.4, +2.4 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cows skin supplying countries in Europe were Italy ($X), Austria ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 62% of total exports.

France, with a CAGR of +10.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals, when their volume increased by 2.5% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 27%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Serbia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the largest importer of raw hides and skins of bovine animals in Europe, committing 66% of total import. Austria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.9% share, followed by Slovenia (7.6%) and Poland (6.9%). Ukraine (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cows skin importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Serbia ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Slovenia, Poland, Austria and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 34%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +16.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
