Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together accounting for 37% of total production. These countries were followed by Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Poland, Ireland, Spain, Ukraine, Belarus and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +5.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average cattle hide and skin yield totaled X kg per head in 2021, rising by 3.1% compared with 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 3.9%. The level of yield peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in Europe shrank modestly to X heads, almost unchanged from 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 0.9%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, shipments abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the nine major exporters of raw hides and skins of cattle, namely Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Austria, Spain, Ireland and Poland, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - each reached a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 38% of total exports. Spain, Italy, the UK, Poland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Slovakia and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +0.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of raw hides and skins of cattle, when their volume increased by 19% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Italy represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 43% of total imports. Germany (X tons) held an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (7.7%) and Austria (7.4%). Denmark (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Spain (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Croatia (X tons), France (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of raw hides and skins of cattle. At the same time, Croatia (+20.7%), Portugal (+6.1%), Denmark (+4.3%) and Slovenia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Croatia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012-2021. France, the Netherlands, Serbia and Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.4%), Spain (-2.0%), Austria (-2.4%) and Poland (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Croatia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Austria saw its share reduced by -1.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of cattle in Europe, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy amounted to -4.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-5.1% per year) and Austria (-7.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
