The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +48.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 15%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2022, shipments abroad of residues of starch manufacture decreased by -6.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, starch manufacture residues exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 39% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Austria (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together generating a 53% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to starch manufacture residues exports from Germany stood at +5.5%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+8.6%), Belgium (+3.9%), Hungary (+3.7%) and Austria (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+12 p.p.), Belgium (+2.8 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Netherlands and France saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -15.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest starch manufacture residues supplying countries in Europe were France ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 44% of total exports. Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of residues of starch manufacture imported in Europe rose to X tons, with an increase of 4.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, starch manufacture residues imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key importers of residues of starch manufacture in 2022, finishing at approx. 26% and 20% of total imports, respectively. Belgium (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total imports. The UK (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Norway (X tons), Greece (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 39% of total imports. Switzerland, Norway, the UK, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Greece, Russia, the Czech Republic and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +6.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
