In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of rice bran, when their volume decreased by -4.4% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, rice bran exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main exporters of rice bran, together mixing up 84% of total exports. Spain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Germany, with a CAGR of +15.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of rice bran increased by 5.4% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.3% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, rice bran imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the main importer of rice bran, generating 36% of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together took near 48% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to rice bran imports into Germany stood at +15.1%. At the same time, Luxembourg (+28.8%), Portugal (+16.0%) and Spain (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-1.7%), the Netherlands (-2.2%) and Belgium (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+20 p.p.), Luxembourg (+11 p.p.) and Portugal (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-4 p.p.), France (-5.9 p.p.) and Belgium (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest rice bran importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Luxembourg ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 51% of total imports.
Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +32.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
