Roasted Malt Market Size in Europe

The Europe roasted malt market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, surging by 7.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of roasted malt decreased by -6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -27.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together reaching 65% of total export. The Netherlands (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and Poland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 55% share of total exports. Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of roasted malt were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Greece (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) was the main importer of roasted malt in Europe, making up 76% of total import. Croatia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +37.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest roasted malt importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 28% of total imports. Russia, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Denmark, Greece, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +27.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
