Rye Market Size in Europe

The Europe rye market was estimated at $X in 2022, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Rye Production in Europe

In value terms, rye production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together comprising 67% of total production. Belarus, Denmark, Ukraine and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

The average rye yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 5.7% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 16%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the rye yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of rye were harvested in Europe; remaining constant against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the rye harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of rye, when their volume decreased by -43% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, rye exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the major exporters of rye in Europe, together comprising 64% of total exports. Latvia (X tons) took a 9.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (5.2%). Ukraine (X tons), France (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Latvia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 75% share of total exports. Ukraine, Russia, France, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +16.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rye Imports

Imports in Europe

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of rye decreased by -39.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, rye imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 56%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of rye, namely Germany, Spain and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - Denmark (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +6.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 39% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rye import price increased by +67.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
