Safflower Seed Market Size in Europe
The Europe safflower seed market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -8.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Safflower Seed Production in Europe
In value terms, safflower seed production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 160%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of safflower seed production, comprising approx. 89% of total volume. Moreover, safflower seed production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold.
In Russia, safflower seed production increased at an average annual rate of +33.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+14.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+11.5% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of safflower seed in Europe declined modestly to X kg per ha, waning by -2.1% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 95% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The safflower seed harvested area reduced to X ha in 2022, waning by -13.2% on 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 104%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Safflower Seed Exports
Exports in Europe
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of safflower seed decreased by -10.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 141%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, safflower seed exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the safflower seed exports, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+30.3%) and the Netherlands (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Russia (+62 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-11.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest safflower seed supplier in Europe, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +34.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+10.3% per year) and Bulgaria (+35.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Safflower Seed Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of safflower seed were imported in Europe; falling by -12.8% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 119%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, safflower seed imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 144%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the largest importers of safflower seed, together generating 81% of total imports. The UK (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +38.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported safflower seed in Europe, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.
In Belgium, safflower seed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+14.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+12.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
