The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 2.4%. Over the period under review, the sheepskin and lambskin yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in Europe; waning by -2.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 2%. Over the period under review, this number attained the maximum level at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) increased by 6.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK was the largest exporter of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ireland (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Greece (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total exports. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheepskin and lambskin exports from the UK stood at -2.7%. At the same time, Romania (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +4.4% from 2012-2021. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ireland (-2.1%), Greece (-3.2%), France (-3.6%) and Spain (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the UK, Italy, Ireland, Romania and France increased by +12, +3.3, +3.1, +2.2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier in Europe, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Spain stood at -11.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-17.3% per year) and France (-8.9% per year).

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 20%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The following importers - Portugal (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in Europe, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy amounted to -10.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-5.7% per year) and France (-13.1% per year).

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
