The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +35.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 43%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Europe
Shelled hazelnut exports surged to X tons in 2021, increasing by 28% against 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +31.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +56.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Italy represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 69% of total exports. Germany (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (6%). The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - each reached a 4.3% share of total exports.
Italy was also the fastest-growing in terms of the shelled hazelnuts exports, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+3.0%), Germany (+2.3%) and the Netherlands (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Spain (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+23 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-3.3 p.p.), Germany (-5.6 p.p.) and Spain (-5.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier in Europe, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.2% share.
In Italy, shelled hazelnut exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, supplies from abroad of shelled hazelnuts increased by 1.2% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 15%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the key importers of shelled hazelnuts in Europe, together accounting for near 59% of total imports. France (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total imports. Switzerland (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 70% of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Austria, which together accounted for a further 22%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +20.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 28%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
