Skim Milk Market Size in Europe
The Europe skim milk market shrank to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.2%. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Skim Milk Production in Europe
In value terms, skim milk production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 13%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together comprising 43% of total production. These countries were followed by Ireland, the Netherlands, the UK, Poland, Belarus, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 41%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +3.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Skim Milk Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2021, overseas shipments of skim milk decreased by -16.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, skim milk exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) represented the largest exporters of skim milk, together comprising 72% of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest skim milk supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Skim Milk Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, overseas purchases of skim milk decreased by -3.1% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, skim milk imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +54.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Belgium was the main importer of skim milk in Europe, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2021. Italy (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (14%) and Germany (12%). Poland (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the skim milk imports, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+17.2%) and Germany (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Netherlands (-5.6%), the UK (-8.2%), Italy (-10.4%) and Portugal (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+36 p.p.), Germany (+4.7 p.p.) and Poland (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the UK, Portugal, the Netherlands and Italy saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -2.2%, -5.2% and -22% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in Europe, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.1% share.
In Belgium, skim milk imports increased at an average annual rate of +39.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+7.1% per year) and Italy (-10.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, skim milk import price increased by +66.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 30%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
