In 2021, the Europe market for smoked fish other than salmon and herring decreased by -5.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, production of smoked fish other than salmon and herring shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 278% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production of growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of smoked fish other than salmon and herring, when their volume increased by 3.1% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 18%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 34% of total exports. Denmark (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Austria (10%), Germany (10%), the Netherlands (9.1%), Lithuania (4.6%) and Norway (4.5%).

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Austria (+121.4%), Germany (+11.3%) and Lithuania (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +121.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Denmark (-1.4%), the Netherlands (-1.6%) and Norway (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Austria (+10 p.p.), Poland (+6 p.p.) and Germany (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Norway, the Netherlands and Denmark saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -5.5% and -7.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplying countries in Europe were Poland ($X), Denmark ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 60% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, the Netherlands, Norway and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +108.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 8.2%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of smoked fish other than salmon and herring were imported in Europe; dropping by -8.3% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -15.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring dropped to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany dominates herring structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2021. Austria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.8% share, followed by the UK (7%), Russia (6.9%) and France (5.1%). The following importers - Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 9.9% of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+36.5%), Austria (+26.7%), France (+9.6%), Romania (+9.6%), the Czech Republic (+5.3%), Belgium (+2.0%) and Switzerland (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the UK (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+13 p.p.), Austria (+6.4 p.p.), Russia (+6.3 p.p.) and France (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the UK (-22.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked fish other than salmon and herring in Europe, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 4.8% share.

In Germany, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+23.9% per year) and France (+8.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
