Snail Market Size in Europe
In 2022, the Europe snail market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Snail Production in Europe
In value terms, snail production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Snail Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2022, snail exports in Europe reduced rapidly to X tons, dropping by -35.6% compared with the year before. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 11%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, snail exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Hungary prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 51% of total exports in 2022. Ireland (X tons) took a 7.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lithuania (7%). Poland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Serbia (X tons), France (X tons), Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Albania (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Hungary decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ukraine (+70.0%), Ireland (+27.8%), Serbia (+25.7%), Lithuania (+16.8%), Albania (+12.1%), Belarus (+11.7%), North Macedonia (+11.0%) and Romania (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +70.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-3.8%), Bulgaria (-8.3%), Poland (-20.9%) and the Czech Republic (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Serbia, Ukraine, Albania, North Macedonia and Romania increased by +11, +7.2, +6.3, +3.5, +3.1, +2.4, +2.3 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest snail supplying countries in Europe were Lithuania ($X), Ireland ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 42% share of total exports. Serbia, Romania, France, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Belarus, Albania, North Macedonia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 50%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +97.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+29.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Snail Imports
Imports in Europe
For the fourth year in a row, Europe recorded decline in purchases abroad of snails (except sea snails), which decreased by -11.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, snail imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Spain was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 54% of total imports. Portugal (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (8.3%), Italy (5.4%) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (4.7%). The Czech Republic (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of snails (except sea snails). At the same time, Bosnia and Herzegovina (+24.2%), the Czech Republic (+10.6%), Lithuania (+9.5%), Portugal (+7.6%) and Italy (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bosnia and Herzegovina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-22.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+23 p.p.), Portugal (+8.6 p.p.), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+4.4 p.p.), Italy (+3.2 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+2.4 p.p.) and Lithuania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-48.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest snail importing markets in Europe were France ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports. Portugal, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Bosnia and Herzegovina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a CAGR of +35.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
