Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +59.4% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, soap exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +64.0% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the key exporters of soap, together achieving 77% of total exports. Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest soap supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 45% share of total exports. Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Russia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of soap, when their volume decreased by -5.9% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, soap imports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.5% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) was the key importer of soap in Europe, making up 44% of total import. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together making up a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons), Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +10.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 33% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Russia, Belgium, Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 44%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +10.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 5.7%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
