For the tenth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of soft drinks, which increased by 15% to X litres in 2021. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, soft drink exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +59.0% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X litres), Austria (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), Poland (X litres), France (X litres), Belgium (X litres), Italy (X litres), Spain (X litres), Switzerland (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Hungary (X litres) and Russia (X litres) represented roughly 82% of total exports in 2021.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest soft drink supplying countries in Europe were Austria ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 46% share of total exports. Switzerland, Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Russia, Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +16.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per litre, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per litre), while the Czech Republic ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the tenth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in overseas purchases of soft drinks, which increased by 14% to X litres in 2021. In general, imports saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, soft drink imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of soft drink imports in 2021 were Germany (X litres), Belgium (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), France (X litres), the UK (X litres), Austria (X litres), Ireland (X litres), Hungary (X litres), Slovakia (X litres), Sweden (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres) and Poland (X litres), together finishing at 70% of total import. Spain (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Hungary (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 33% of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Among the main importing countries, Austria, with a CAGR of +19.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per litre, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 5.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
