Sorghum Market Size in Europe
In 2022, the Europe sorghum market increased by 13% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -7.3% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Sorghum Production in Europe
In value terms, sorghum production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together accounting for 68% of total production. Hungary, Russia, Switzerland and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +23.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average sorghum yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 7.5% against 2021. The yield indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sorghum yield decreased by -7.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the sorghum yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of sorghum production in Europe dropped to X ha, falling by -1.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Sorghum Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of sorghum exported in Europe stood at X tons, picking up by 2.5% compared with the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 28%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
France represented the main exporter of sorghum in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from France increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Austria (+35.0%), Moldova (+29.9%), Russia (+27.8%) and Hungary (+21.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +35.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-4.1%) and Romania (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (+12 p.p.), Hungary (+11 p.p.), Russia (+5.6 p.p.), Moldova (+3.6 p.p.) and Austria (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Romania and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -5.3% and -19.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest sorghum supplier in Europe, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in France stood at +5.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-3.6% per year) and Hungary (+14.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in France ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sorghum Imports
Imports in Europe
Sorghum imports surged to X tons in 2022, picking up by 16% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 76%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Spain was the main importer of sorghum in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2022. Italy (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports. Poland (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Spain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sorghum imports, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+9.4%), Belgium (+6.1%), Italy (+2.2%) and the UK (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-7.0%) and Germany (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain, Belgium and Poland increased by +28, +3.5 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Spain ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorghum in Europe, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Spain stood at +20.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+2.3% per year) and Belgium (+6.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
