Sparkling Wine Market Size in Europe

The Europe sparkling wine market contracted remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -16.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a noticeable decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Sparkling Wine Production in Europe

In value terms, sparkling wine production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of sparkling wine exported in Europe rose slightly to X litres, growing by 3.2% compared with the year before. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +23.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports rose to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X litres) was the major exporter of sparkling wine, making up 48% of total exports. France (X litres) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (17%). Germany (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Italy was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sparkling wine exports, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-3.2 p.p.) and Spain (-19 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest sparkling wine supplier in Europe, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in France stood at +4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+11.0% per year) and Spain (-2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per litre, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while Spain ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of sparkling wine imported in Europe fell to X litres, with a decrease of -6.7% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The UK was the major importer of sparkling wine in Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X litres, which was near 26% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X litres) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (8.6%), Belgium (6.7%) and France (5.6%). Sweden (X litres), Switzerland (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), Latvia (X litres), Austria (X litres), Lithuania (X litres), Poland (X litres) and Italy (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the UK increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+22.3%), Poland (+17.7%), Sweden (+15.0%), France (+9.3%), Lithuania (+8.3%), the Netherlands (+5.2%), Switzerland (+3.3%) and Italy (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. Belgium, Austria and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sweden, Latvia, France, Poland and the UK increased by +2.7, +2.6, +2.3, +1.9 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sparkling wine in Europe, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.2% share.

In the UK, sparkling wine imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.2% per year) and Italy (+7.3% per year).
