The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, straight saw blade exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Switzerland represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 33% of total exports. Sweden (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (13%), Poland (12%), Germany (8.6%), Belgium (5.9%) and the UK (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +68.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X) remains the largest straight saw blade supplier in Europe, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Switzerland stood at +40.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+14.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -8.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, straight saw blade export price increased by +55.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of straight saw blades for working metal imported in Europe amounted to X tons, with an increase of 2.4% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, straight saw blade imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the largest importers of straight saw blades for working metal, together constituting 75% of total imports. Greece (X tons), Italy (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to straight saw blade imports into the Netherlands stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Greece (+30.9%), Belgium (+14.0%), Switzerland (+13.1%), Sweden (+9.8%), Spain (+9.2%), Romania (+4.6%), France (+3.5%) and Italy (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-2.7%), Russia (-5.3%) and Poland (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium, Spain, Greece, Sweden, France and Switzerland increased by +7.4, +3.4, +3.3, +3.2, +1.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Russia, Poland, Greece and Romania, which together accounted for a further 44%.
Greece, with a CAGR of +17.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
