Sugar Beet Market Size in Europe

The Europe sugar beet market reduced to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sugar Beet Production in Europe

In value terms, sugar beet production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together accounting for 59% of total production. Poland, Ukraine, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Belarus and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +2.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sugar beet yield in Europe declined slightly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -2.4% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the sugar beet yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of sugar beet were harvested in Europe; leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area showed a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the sugar beet harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Sugar Beet Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of sugar beet decreased by -10.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, sugar beet exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +96.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany was the major exporter of sugar beet in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together making up a 31% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sugar beet exports from Germany stood at +25.3%. At the same time, Lithuania (+63.4%), Latvia (+26.7%) and Slovakia (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +63.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-1.2%), Hungary (-4.2%) and the Netherlands (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Slovakia, Lithuania and Latvia increased by +49, +9.7, +2.4 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest sugar beet supplier in Europe, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.9% share.

In Germany, sugar beet exports increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (+15.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sugar Beet Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of sugar beet imported in Europe rose notably to X tons, with an increase of 9.7% on the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +101.8% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 53%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sugar beet imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Switzerland represented the main importer of sugar beet in Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 40% of total imports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Croatia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together took near 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Denmark (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +244.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Denmark ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +133.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
