Sugary Soft Drink Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe sugary soft drink market increased by 6.5% to $X, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the market value increased by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, sugary soft drink production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of production peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

For the eleventh consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of sugary soft drinks, which increased by 5.3% to X litres in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +83.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +86.6% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Austria (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), Germany (X litres), Poland (X litres) and France (X litres), together reaching 59% of total export. It was distantly followed by the UK (X litres), achieving a 4.5% share of total exports. The following exporters - Hungary (X litres), Belgium (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Russia (X litres), Serbia (X litres), Romania (X litres) and Spain (X litres) - together made up 21% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +23.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the largest sugary soft drink supplier in Europe, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Austria amounted to +6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+10.1% per year) and Germany (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per litre, declining by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the Czech Republic ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, sugary soft drink imports in Europe rose sharply to X litres, growing by 9% on the year before. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.4% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +97.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X litres), the UK (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), France (X litres) and Belgium (X litres) was the major importer of sugary soft drinks in Europe, making up 50% of total import. It was distantly followed by Ireland (X litres), committing a 4.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X litres), Hungary (X litres), Slovakia (X litres), Sweden (X litres), Poland (X litres), Portugal (X litres) and the Czech Republic (X litres) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +18.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 35% of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +22.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, rising by 2.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
